Zinc plating is an electroplating process that deposits a thin layer of zinc onto steel to protect it from corrosion. The zinc corrodes first, acting as a sacrificial layer, so the steel underneath stays intact. It is the most common corrosion finish for steel fasteners and brackets.
Specify zinc plating whenever a carbon or alloy steel part will face moisture, humidity, or light outdoor exposure. It suits steel bolts, nuts, screws, brackets, and machined components where rust protection matters more than a bright cosmetic layer. Where the finish needs extra corrosion resistance, a zinc chromate coating is added as a passivate.

Corrosion, wear and dimensional impact
Zinc plating provides solid corrosion resistance by sacrificing itself before the steel can rust. The galvanized zinc layer keeps working even where the surface is scratched, which is its main advantage over paint.
The trade-off is thickness. Plating adds material to threads and close-fit bores, so we plan the allowance. Threads may be masked or sized to accommodate the deposit, and we confirm the plating thickness before machining so the finished part still meets ±0.01 mm on critical features and ISO 2768-m elsewhere. We review the dimensional impact with the finisher so there are no surprises at shipment.
